CASE STUDY 4

BROAD STREET REDEVELOPMENT

Commercial Project
Client:
Chap Civils
Location: Aberdeen

Prime were awarded the civils package here in the summer of 2017 working alongside CHAP Civils. We started on site in October 2017 where we were up against the clock straight away. Mainly due to the location and the dates for the Christmas market, the first part of the works had to be complete within a 6 week time frame. This was achieved with an increase in Labour and extended working hours.

We also had to consider the curing period on the bonding agent and bedding mortar we were using. Prime were heavily involved in the design of the recipe for the bedding mortar, which took place at CHAP Quarry. An important part of this was making sure the product was a direct equivalent of the Aberdeen Council specification for the preferred bedding.

There was a great variation of setts, kerbs and slabs on this project, a lot of this was imported from overseas. This included 150mm Granite kerbs, 150mm Granite setts (random sizes) and 80mm Caithness. Laying patterns weren’t always straight forward with a well designed channel running either side of the carriageway, an intricate turning circle and a large fountain feature. Although there was a large amount of new product installed, under the instruction of Aberdeen City Council we recycled and re used as much old caithness slabs as possible, as well as the environmental benefits this created a beautiful contrast between the old and new!
